    Freezing Eggs

    • What is the process of freezing eggs?

ALL WOMEN AT BIRTH HAVE A FIXED NUMBER OF EGGS INSIDE THEIR OVARIES.  FROM BIRTH UNTIL THE FIRST MENSTRUATION, THESE EGGS REMAIN INACTIVE.  STARTING WITH THE FIRST MENSTRUAL CYCLE, EVERY MONTH A SMALL GROUP OF EGGS TRY TO ACHIEVE OVULATION.  ONLY ONE GETS THERE AND IT IS THE ONE THAT EXITS THE OVARY (OVULATION) AND IS DIRECTED THROUGH THE FALLOPIAN TUBE TO THE UTERUS.

THE PROCESS OF EGG FREEZING OR CRYOPRESERVATION OF EGGS BEGINS WITH A TREATMENT BEING APPLIED DURING THE FIRST DAYS OF A CYCLE TO GET MORE THAN ONE EGG TO THE OVULATION PHASE.  AT THAT TIME, THE PATIENT IS SEDATED UNDER ANESTHESIA AND WE EXTRACT THESE EGGS THROUGH AN ULTRASOUND-GUIDED OVARIAN PUNCTURE.  THESE EGGS ARE THEN FROZEN TO BE USED BY THE PATIENT AT A FUTURE DATE.

    • Who can freeze their eggs?

EVERY WOMAN WHO HAS STARTED HER MENSTRUAL CYCLE AND, ACCORDING TO COMPLEMENTARY TESTS, HAS SUFFICIENT AND SATISFACTORILY RESPONSIVE  OVARIAN RESERVES.

    • In what cases is it usually done or for what reasons?

WOMEN WHO ARE AWARE OF THE PROGRESSIVE DECREASE OF THE CAPACITY OF THEIR OVARIES WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME DECIDE TO FREEZE THEIR EGGS FOR FUTURE USE.

THE PROCEDURE IS NORMALLY UNDERTAKEN BY WOMEN THAT FOR WORK OR PERSONAL REASONS POSTPONE PREGNANCY.  ALSO WOMEN WHO NEED TO GO THROUGH ANY TREATMENT THAT MAY AFFECT THE QUANTITY AND/OR QUALITY OF THEIR EGGS.

    • What previous tests should be taken by a woman who wants to freeze her eggs?

GENERAL GYNECOLOGY EXAM, MAMMOGRAM, GYNECOLOGICAL ULTRASOUND, CERVICAL CYTOLOGY, VAGINAL CULTURE AND BLOOD ANALYSIS.

    • What are the re-implantation success rates of these eggs following the freezing procedure?

SURVIVAL RATE OF DEFROST IS 90%, ALTHOUGH IN THESE CASES, STATISTICS ARE QUITE VARIABLE.  EVERY CASE MUST BE EVALUATED INDIVIDUALLY.  PERSPECTIVELY, A WOMAN WHO HAS FROZEN HER EGGS IN GOOD CONDITION WITHOUT ANY OTHER COLLATERAL FACTORS, CAN SEE A SUCCESS RATE OF 60%.

    • How long can an egg remain frozen?

    INDEFINITELY.

    • Is there an age limit to receive a frozen egg?

LEGALLY THERE IS NO LIMIT.  THE ONLY REQUIREMENT IS THAT THE WOMEN HAS NOT EXCEEDED THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AGE OF MENSTRUAL CYCLES (MENOPAUSE), APPROXIMATELY 50 YEARS OLD.

    • What does this procedure normally cost?

PRICES CAN VARY FROM ONE CENTER TO ANOTHER; BETWEEN 2500-3000 € WITH THE ADDITIONAL COST OF MEDICATIONS, 700-800 €
